read moreOne of Tasmania’s leading tourism experiences, the walk to Wineglass Bay from the lookout to the beach, has been re-opened after a $500,000 upgrade to improve visitor comfort and safety by providing improved step levels.
Initiated through the Tasmanian Government’s Tourism Infrastructure in Parks Fund, the upgrade is part of a two-year $8 million to upgrade vital parks infrastructure across the State.
Upgrades to facilities at Freycinet, Bruny Island, Mt Field, The Nut and Fortescue Bay are among the 34 infrastructure projects to be undertaken in 2017/18.
Commenting on the need for the upgrade, Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman stated “we have a target to increase visitor overnight stays in regional areas by 70% and increase visitor spend by 50% by 2022, and upgrades like this are vital in helping us to maintain the momentum and keep attracting tourists to the State.”
Freycinet is Tasmania’s most visited national park with 292,000 visitors in 2016/17, with about 60%t of visitors to Freycinet walking to the Wineglass Bay lookout.
A project to assist in reducing the car parking congestion for the coming summer period is also under way. Two new overflow parking areas with space for 50 cars will be created along the western side of Freycinet Drive, within 200 metres of the main Wineglass Bay car park.
The track at Hazards beach was also repaired and upgraded following flood damage in 2016.
