read moreTurf playing fields and a sporting pavilion with change rooms are being constructed at the Baldivis District Sporting Club in the City of Rockingham following the Western Australian Government’s commitment of $2.5 million.
With Baldivis being one of the fastest growing sporting communities in Western Australia, this significant investment will contribute to meeting the demand for playing grounds for local Australian rules football and cricket clubs.
The project involves the installation of approximately eight hectares of turf and will be an important piece of sporting infrastructure in the southern suburbs.
The City of Rockingham received a grant of $1.5 million for the development of turf playing fields at the Baldivis District Sporting Complex, and a further $1 million for the development of a district pavilion and oval floodlighting at the site, through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
The City also received $10 million through the WA Recovery Plan towards the Baldivis Indoor Recreation Centre, a $18.8 million project featuring four indoor multi-purpose courts, change rooms, meeting rooms and a café.
Additional funding for the new $47.6 million Baldivis District Sporting Complex has been provided by the City of Rockingham ($35 million) and Cricket Australia ($100,000).
Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan advised "this project will benefit the Baldivis and surrounding local communities significantly providing sporting infrastructure and great playing fields for locals and visitors to enjoy.
"I'm pleased to support this important community infrastructure project as part of our WA Recovery Plan which is providing a boost to the economy following the impacts of the pandemic.
"Encouraging people to get out, get active, and get into sport and active recreation has never been more important as we try to help to reconnect communities, increase participation for local sporting organisations and create jobs for local workers."
WA Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray added "The CSRFF helps to foster healthier and more connected communities by providing better places for people to play sport and recreate, while also providing project work for WA businesses and creating local jobs.”
The playing fields and pavilion project is expected to be completed by early 2022 with the Baldivis Indoor Recreation Centre expected to be completed late 2022.
