read moreAdventure challenge race series Tough Mudder will be holding its first ever event in South Australia over the weekend of 13th and 14th December.
Referred to as ‘probably the toughest event on the planet’, Tough Mudder is a 16 to 20 kilometre obstacle course challenge designed by British Special Forces that is now set to test the all-round strength, stamina, teamwork and camaraderie of South Australians.
To be held at Langhorne Creek vineyard an hours drive from Adelaide, the inaugural South Australian event will serve up thick scrubby bush, open farmland and “wicked” mud from the Bremer River Floodplains to provide “the world’s best obstacles to maximise this unique terrain.”
Introducing the event, Tough Mudder General Manager – Australasia, Jeremy Kann explained “we are extremely excited to bring Tough Mudder to Adelaide and to unveil Langhorne Creek as the location for the state’s first ever event.
“The majestic vineyard will be the ideal location for (our) ‘mad-minded’ course designers to build and design the world’s best obstacle course event.
“We have had an overwhelming response from locals over the last six months excited about the prospect of an event coming to town – so we can’t wait to unleash the course.”
At Langhorne Creek, ‘Mudders’ (as participants are known) will tackle over 16 military-style obstacles, including some of the hallmark Tough Mudder obstacles including ‘Everest’ – a greased-up quarter-pipe; and ‘Electroshock Therapy’ – a gauntlet of 10,000-volt-charged dangling wires participants must barrel through to get to the finish line.
Kann adds that Tough Mudder events have wide appeal, “with Mudders ranging range from gym junkies to business executives to mums.
“The goal for participants is not to win, but simply to finish – on average, only 78% successfully complete the event.
“With a course designed to be virtually impossible to complete individually, 80% of participants register with a team.
“Tough Mudder is more than just a weekend event – it’s a community dedicated to pushing boundaries, bringing out the best in one another and sharing new experiences with others.”
Highlighting the dedication of ‘Mudders’, Kann adds “more than 4,000 diehard Mudders have even had the Tough Mudder logo permanently tattooed on their bodies!”
The goal for participants is not to win a medal but simply to finish – on average, only 78% successfully complete the event. With a course designed to be virtually impossible to complete individually, 80% of participants register with a team.
Tough Mudder was started in 2010 by co-founders Will Dean and Guy Livingstone. Dean came up with the idea while at Harvard Business School, although his professors told him it wouldn’t work.
However, when the first event was held in May 2010 at Bear Creek Resort, Pennsylvania, USA, having expected 500 participants, close to 5,000 showed up.
Since then Tough Mudder has grown rapidly; from three events in the US in 2010, to over 60 events across the world in 2014 (with an expected 600,000 participants) – including six events in Australia and one event in New Zealand in 2014.
Registrations for the Tough Mudder Adelaide event are now open, with spectator tickets also available.
