WA Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman announced the open tender process to appoint a consultant to undertake an independent review into the culture and governance of the WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) which is now live.
In June 2022, Sport Integrity Australia conducted a review of the WAIS Women's Artistic Gymnastics Program, which ran from 1984 to 2016. This was in response to allegations that gymnasts, including children, experienced harmful behaviour and practices while participating in the program.
Following the report's findings, the Sport and Recreation Minister directed the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) to undertake a range of actions, including instigating a comprehensive culture and governance review of WAIS.
As such, the DLGSC has issued a tender that is seeking proposals to conduct the review from credible and experienced proponents. An open tender process is being used to help ensure transparency and accountability.
The review will involve the participation of a wide range of stakeholders, including the WAIS Board, staff and current and former athletes.
Minister Templeman advised "The achievements of our athletes are a source of pride for Western Australians and an inspiration for future generations.
"WAIS was created to nurture and support our elite athletes to achieve at the highest level on the world stage. Critical to that success is the quality of WAIS coaching and its high-performance development programs.
"This review of WAIS culture and governance will ensure we have the right conditions in place to properly support our elite athletes to achieve the success they strive for.
"The WA Government is committed to ensuring WAIS is a leader on and off the field - dedicated to enhancing high performance while also ensuring athlete wellbeing is prioritised, especially when children and young people are involved."
