Surf Life Saving Australia issues warning ahead of severe heatwave conditions

Surf Life Saving Australia issues warning ahead of severe heatwave conditions
November 8, 2024

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe heatwave warning for many parts of Queensland, Western Australia and Northern Territory, with a hot air mass causing temperatures to soar, and northern Australia expected to be one of the hottest places in the world.

Ahead of the impacts envisioned caused by such an event, Surf lifesavers are issuing an urgent warning to all Australians to stay safe around water.

Surf Life Saving Australia Chief Executive Adam Weir notes “with very hot conditions forecast for the end of this week, staying safe around water needs to be front of mind.

“Lifeguards and surf lifesavers are getting prepared as we anticipate a surge in people heading to beaches in a bid to keep cool.

“While we know Australians love enjoying hot, sunny days on the countries amazing beaches, please listen to the advice of our surf lifesavers, know your limitations, and swim between the red and yellow flags.

“And for those in the Northern Territory, please be stinger safe if you are intending to visit the coastline or go recreational fishing.’

Bureau of Meteorology advice:

  • Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell
  • Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre
  • Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings earl in the day to keep the heat out of your home
  • If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool

Surf Life Saving Australia advises people to:

  • Swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags
  • Download the BeachSafe APP or visit org.au to find a patrolled beach and for latest safety advice
  • Always supervise children in, on and around water
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
  • Wear a lifejacket when boating, rock fishing or paddling
  • Check the conditions, including weather forecasts
  • Know your limits
  • STOP, LOOK, PLAN
