Stormwater to Irrigate Albert Park Sportsfields

August 31, 2009
The Victoria Government has announced the completion of an 18-month $1.5 million project that diverts stormwater into Albert Park lake through the street drainage system.
This water that can now be used to irrigate seventeen of the parkâs twenty-one sportsfields making them playable all year round and resistant to drought conditions.
It is estimated that the project will inject approximately 200 millilitres per year into Albert Park Lake, 110 millilitres of which will be used to irrigate the sports fields.
The Parks Victoria project is designed to maintain a healthy park and a healthy population. Harvested through four stormwater drains redirected from suburban locations, the stormwater will be held in Albert Park Lake to balance demands for both social and environmental needs. The natural filtration process of the stormwater treatment control ponds, in addition to the lakes natural ecosystem, assist to clean the stormwater to meet the water quality levels required for irrigation use.
To manage the issues of pollution, Parks Victoria has made design modifications to all its stormwater treatment systems including installation of litter traps, planting, netting and works to maintain the integrity of the lake wall.
