Rupert Myer to continue as Australia Council chair

Rupert Myer to continue as Australia Council chair
July 9, 2015

Several days of uncertainty over the leadership of the Australia Council for the Arts was ended earlier this week when acting Minister for the Arts Warren Truss announced the reappointment of Rupert Myer as Chair of the Council’s Board.

With the Australia Council’s Chair and Deputy Chair roles having expired on 1st July, Minister for the Arts Senator Brandis failed to announce whether the terms of Myer and Deputy Chair Robyn Archer would be renewed before an overseas visit.

The announcement that Myer would continue in the role ended speculation that the Australia Council was set for new leadership, although Archer's position remains uncertain.

Myer has been silent in the controversy that has raged around the loss of $110 million from the Australia Council's budget and the establishment of the National Program for Excellence in the Arts.

However, Archer spoke at the recent ArtsHub Conference about the difficulties faced by the Australia Council in the wake of the budget and the need for the Australia Council to be resilient in the face of “a major and unexpected disturbance”.

The acting Minister for the Arts also announced key appointments in the museum and filmsectors.

At the National Museum of Australia Council, outgoing chair Daniel Gilbert has been replaced by his deputy David Jones.

In the screen sector, Gabrielle Trainor has been reappointed as Chair of the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) Board and Wayne Denning will take up the role of Deputy Chair. Michael Loebenstein will continue as the Chief Executive.

Neil Peplow has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer for the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) replacing Sandra Levy who completed her eight-year term as Chief Executive of AFTRS in June.

All appointments are for three years with the opportunity to reappoint.
