Rockhampton’s Southside Library is inviting the region’s residents to participate in free monthly laughter yoga sessions.

The laughter yoga program is one of the many fantastic programs in the Rockhampton Library Service’s diverse range of offerings.

Deputy Mayor and Communities, Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson shared “our library programs are constantly evolving to meet the needs of our community, and these laughter yoga sessions are a fantastic example of the innovative and engaging programs on offer.

“Laughter yoga is a unique and enjoyable way to improve your mood, reduce stress, and support both your physical and mental health.

“With sessions held at lunchtime, this program is ideal for CBD workers looking for a quick and effective way to de-stress and recharge during the workday.”

Originally devised in India 30 years ago, laughter yoga combines intentional laughter with gentle movement and deep breathing, making it accessible for all ages and abilities.

Michelle Ryan, a qualified laughter yoga facilitator and library volunteer, said that no yoga experience, jokes, or special flexibility are required to participate.

“When we laugh heartily together, we experience real physiological changes that help us breathe better, relax more deeply, and improve our mood,” Ryan shared.

“Laughter yoga is an excellent way to create space between ourselves and the anxieties, frustrations, or fears we might be carrying.

“It’s like a playgroup for grown-ups. We laugh, clap, move playfully, and simply breathe. The result is a genuine sense of connection and wellbeing.”

Free laughter yoga sessions are held at the Southside Library on the first Tuesday of each month from 1:00pm – 1:45pm, beginning on 4th February 2025.

All ages and abilities are welcome, and no registration is required.
