With the $3 million second stage Demolition of the original pool - built in 1998 - was completed earlier this year. including a new 50 metre outdoor pool - agreed earlier this year, the latest stage also includes a new basketball court and shaded pool areas.
The move comes follows Lane Cove Council having closed the facility due to “urgent safety concerns” related to the “rapid decline” of the pool’s structure.
The 58-year-old facility was due to be shut down for rebuilding later this year but the Council brought forward the project, meaning it will be out of action for the 2019/20 swimming season.
The final stage of the redevelopment will cost $2.7 million and includes a new youth centre, a 12-metre high grandstand, half basketball court, cafe store, amenities building and shade structures covering the pool marshalling area.
Once completed, the council said the project will be able to accommodate crowds of up to 700 people during peak school swimming carnival seasons.
Demolition of the original pool - built in 1998 - was completed earlier this year.
The Council said the redevelopment “will improve the aquatic and leisure centre facilities for local residents” and was designed to “minimise any impact on the adjoining properties”.
The facility is expected to reopen to the public before the start of the 2020/21 swimming season.
The Federal Government will contribute $2 million towards the redevelopment.
