The week is an opportunity for Kiwis to try something new, enjoy outdoor adventures with friends and whanau among the environmental treasures of Aotearoa.
Recreation Aotearoa Outdoors Programme Manager, Jen Riley notes “no adventure is too big or too small, as long as you’re doing it safely and with respect to the natural environment.
“Getting outdoors is proven to be beneficial for our physical and mental wellbeing, and with the curve balls the world has thrown us, it's more important than ever to take care of our waiora. We would love to see as many Kiwis as possible getting outside and reaping the benefits of fresh air and physical activity.”
GO Week has the backing of a number of leading outdoor recreation, tourism, and safety organisations in Aotearoa, including the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council, DOC, Further Faster, Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand, Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, the Game Animal Council, Holiday Parks New Zealand, Pest Free Kaipātiki, and Water Safety New Zealand.
There are a number of different ways Kiwis can get involved and share their support for GO Week this year.
Riley adds “we hope that Kiwis everywhere will take part in whatever way they can this year. We know there is uncertainty surrounding current alert levels and movement limitations for many of us. But that doesn't mean you can't connect with the outdoors - you may not be able to participate in that rock climbing course, but you can still wander around your local park or set up camp in the backyard.”
