Queensland Government calls for Expressions of Interest for Brisbane 2032 Legacy Committee members

Queensland Government calls for Expressions of Interest for Brisbane 2032 Legacy Committee members
February 24, 2022

The Queensland Government is calling for Expressions of Interest from Queenslanders to become the 12 members for the proposed 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Legacy Committee.

The Legacy Committee will plan how Queensland will benefit long after the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games with all Queenslanders over the age of 18 encouraged to apply.

Along with the 12 members will be a chair and deputy chair. A special Youth Adviser aged 16 will also be appointed. Four members of the committee must live in regional Queensland.

Queensland Premier and Minister for the Olympics Annastacia Palaszczuk said the special Legacy Committee will ensure planning for the Games has a view to the future, long after the stadiums empty and the Closing Ceremonies are over.

“Hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the biggest transformational event our State will ever see,” the Premier said.

“While other groups concentrate on the decade of preparation for the Games, the Legacy Committee will concentrate on the decades of celebration that follow.

“Our focus has never been on a few weeks of competition.

“It must be on the decades’ worth on investment that will set Queensland up for the next 20 years.”

Applications are sought from those with experience in:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities
  • Arts and Culture
  • Business and industry
  • Community sport
  • High-performance sport
  • Environment and sustainability
  • Accessibility and inclusion
  • Small business
  • Tourism
  • Young people (under 18 representative)
  • Health and wellbeing and
  • Innovation

Premier Palaszczuk added “The Legacy Committee will naturally have its focus on Queensland. One idea put to me recently is that there should be a Queensland Pavilion as part of our Olympic venues to tell visitors the story of our state.

“This is about what happens the week, the month and the year after the Games. How will what we do now shape our future? “Those are the exciting questions this committee will answer.”

Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympic Sport and Engagement Stirling Hinchliffe added “we’re looking for Queenslanders from different backgrounds and lived experiences to identify a pipeline of lasting opportunity from the 2032 Games.

“Whether it’s maximising the Games’ benefit to community sport, our tourism industry or Queenslanders’ health and wellbeing, there are legacies we can leverage in the decade before and after 2032. Every host city or region is different.

“The Legacy Committee gives Queenslanders a chance to assess the experiences of past hosts and prioritise what we want to achieve from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Advertisements will appear in mainstream and social media. A recruitment company will provide a shortlist from the applicants.
