read moreThe Port Macquarie Coastal Walk upgrades are now complete and include wider paths, disability compliant grades, upgraded stairs and handrails and new furnishings with the Charlie Uptin to Flagstaff Hill section, Doctor’s Walk and Kenny Walk all receiving attention.
This follows upgrades to the Westport Park segment of the Coastal Walk, completed in late 2018.
Retaining walls have been upgraded to manage erosion, and measures put in place to protect and regenerate natural vegetation. There is also improved signage, drinking fountains and new viewing platforms at key points enabling walkers to absorb the spectacular coastline.
The upgrades were undertaken as part of the Coastal Walk Master Plan, which has been developed with the community, aimed at improving the overall experience and to improve accessibility and safety along the popular walk.
The Coastal Walk winds its way for nine kilometres along picturesque beaches, and is a much-loved attraction, enjoyed by more than 500,000 locals and visitors each year.
Greater Port Macquarie Mayor Peta Pinson said the upgrades add to the area’s breathtaking beauty and added "it’s been so pleasing to see the project progress over the past few years, and despite the challenges we’ve been experiencing as a community, this is a wonderful achievement… one definitely worth celebrating.
"I can’t wait to get out and about and experience the upgraded walk, and look forward to seeing families, exercisers, visitors and those with a disability also enjoying the walk, taking some time out and taking in the amazing views… and the whales of course!
"This project would not have been possible without the support of the NSW Government of whom we are most appreciative, and it makes me extremely proud to be Mayor during a time when we are delivering so much on behalf of our community."
The Port Macquarie Coastal Walk upgrade is a $1.762 million project, with Council contributing $997,000, and the NSW Government contributing $765,000 under the Regional Growth - Environment and Tourism Fund, established under Restart NSW.
