Port Macquarie Recreation Action Plan outlines hopes for facilities expansion

Port Macquarie Recreation Action Plan outlines hopes for facilities expansion
August 30, 2017

The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's recently completed Recreation Action Plan includes proposals for the expansion of the Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium.

Jointly funded by the Council and the Federal Government, the Plan suggests the expansion of the recently completed venue with three additional multi-purpose courts (increasing the number of courts to six), new multi-purpose activity rooms, offices, amenities, a kiosk and parking facilities.

Aiming to provide the Council with a framework to provide for sport and recreation facilities in the short and medium term, other projects include the stage two development of the Googik Track, further refurbishment work at the Wauchope Aquatic Centre and a leash-free dog exercise park at Henry Kendall Reserve.

An Annual Report presented to the July Council meeting outlined the status of the plan’s implementation and reviewed outcomes and recommendations.

It said a change in approach was necessary to ensure better flexibility in timing for delivery of priority projects, advising “the changes and updates will assist in ensuring that the plan remains relevant for the current and future needs of sport and recreation in the Port Macquarie-Hastings.”

Campaigner Diane Gilbert from Wauchope Community Heated Indoor Pool said she supported the Recreation Action Plan and she asked for the Council to include an active search for funding to complete the Wauchope Aquatic Centre.

While the Wauchope pool upgrade stage two construction is listed in the immediate priority projects 2017/18, Gilbert told local media “many of our residents are very concerned that they have seen no visible start to the next stage of the upgrade.

“There is no further mention of Wauchope pool in short term priority projects, nor in the medium term priority projects, is this because it is as yet unfunded?”
