read moreConstruction at the Perth Stadium is stimulating the Western Australian economy, with new figures released showing more than $450 million worth of stadium subcontracts going to local companies.
Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said Perth Stadium was boosting the local economy, with the majority of companies working on-site being Western Australian.
Minister Davies stated “nearly 80% of all contracts awarded to date have been to WA companies, which is having positive flow-on effects to our local economy.
“Hundreds of jobs have been created as a result of this investment by the ... Government in this major infrastructure project. There are about 800 construction workers now on-site, and this workforce is expected to peak at 1,200 in the next few months.”
The total number of local workers expected to be involved in the stadium over its three-year construction phase is about 5,800. There are 100 apprentices/trainees now on-site and 127 have worked on the project to date.
Since construction started two years ago, 77 contracts (worth $456 million) have been awarded to Western Australian businesses, 20 contracts have gone to Australian businesses (worth $78.9 million) and two contracts have been awarded to overseas businesses (worth $8.6 million).
Minister Davies said stadium builder Multiplex was meeting its apprentice and trainee targets set in its contract with the government, adding “it is wonderful to see young West Australians benefiting from the Perth Stadium construction and I couldn’t think of a more exciting place to learn a trade.”
Multiplex has also committed to strategies to increase the employment of local indigenous Australians. The builder has partnered with the Wirrpanda Foundation and to date, has had more than 20 indigenous apprentices, trainees and laborers on-site. As the stadium builder, Multiplex is responsible for sourcing and securing procurement packages for the construction phase.
Construction of the stadium remains on schedule to open in time for the start of the 2018 AFL season.
