Perth ready for economic windfall from hosting four AFL finals

Perth ready for economic windfall from hosting four AFL finals
September 7, 2015

With the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles topping the AFL 2015 Ladder, Perth has been guaranteed an unprecedented four AFL finals matches over the coming weeks - with Perth business leaders predicting a $100 million boost for Western Australia's economy.

Irrespective of whether the Eagles or Dockers win or lose their qualifying finals at the city's Domain Stadium this coming weekend (Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September), Perth will be hosting a historic four finals matches.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia (CCIWA), the state’s peak business body, has predicted that each of these finals match will generate more than $24 million for the local economy.

CCIWA Policy Director Dale Leggett told Perth newspaper The Sunday Times "having the Dockers and Eagles finish one-two on the AFL ladder is not just great for the West’s chances of winning the flag, it’s also great for the WA economy.

“Each AFL final hosted in WA is expected to generate more than $24 million, that means a potential economic boost of nearly $100 million across the finals series.

“Both teams should be proud of their achievements this season and even if you don’t support one of our home teams, everyone’s a winner.”

Tourism Council WA Chief Executive Evan Hall added that each finals match in Perth would attract 8,000 interstate fans, who are expected to would directly spend $9.4 million on accommodation, hospitality, transport and retail.

Hall stated "for four finals, we would estimate 31,600 interstate attendees directly spending $37.5 million during their trip to WA.

“Every AFL final creates a mini-boom of interstate visitors, which is great news for our economy and local jobs”

Perth Stadium Management, which operates Domain Stadium, is gearing up for its biggest September on record, with capacity crowds of 43,500 expected for each final scheduled.

More than 1,000 staff will be rostered for each game.

Transporting fans to interstate matches presents a challenge for the AFL during this year's finals series, with official AFL carrier Virgin Australia adding thousands of additional seats its flight schedule in anticipation of increased demand.
