Partnership announced to create the Bondi to Manly Walk

Partnership announced to create the Bondi to Manly Walk
November 25, 2018

Officially announced today in Sydney, a partnership to create the Bondi to Manly Walk - an epic 80 kilometre trail - will soon become a reality.

Set to offer one of the best ways to explore Sydney’s stunning coastline on foot, the trial is being made possible with local and state government agencies recently signed a memorandum of understanding.

The City of Sydney, Mosman Council, North Sydney Council, Northern Beaches Council, Waverley Council, Woollahra Council, Property New South Wales, the New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage, the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, and Bondi to Manly Walk Supporters have all committed to working together to create the walk.

Together with federal and state government agencies, the mayors agreed to link existing coastal and harbourside walking tracks and paths, and erect consistent signs and directions.

The proposal links existing coastal and harbourside tracks and paths between 2 of Australia's most famous surf beaches. The multi-day walk is tipped to become a major tourist attraction with the same status as some of the world's great walking trails.

The 80 kilometre trail will pass through notable sights including the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Royal Botanic Garden. Extending along the harbour foreshore close to Circular Quay, the Bondi to Manly trail will meander through Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay and continue along through Rushcutters Bay Park.

The walk will highlight Sydney's history, including its Indigenous people, the arrival of the First Fleet and the building of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

It will also pass Taronga Zoo, Bradleys Head, Clifton Gardens, Middle Head, and Aboriginal rock engravings at Clontarf before heading to North Head and ending in Manly.

The walk will include signage and information about the original inhabitants of the Eora nation. Mosman mayor Carolyn Corrigan said it would showcase her council's rich Indigenous history and culture.

John Faulkner, former Defence Minister; Di Westaway, founder of Coastrek; and Lachlan Harris, co-founder/Chief Executive of One Big Switch, have helped establish the Bondi to Manly harbour walk.

Harris, who, with Faulkner, co-founded the not-for-profit Bondi to Manly Walk Supporters, advised “the idea that you can walk from Bondi to Manly is a reality now."

Bondi to Manly Walk Supporters has tipped it as the greatest urban walk in the world, celebrating Sydney’s natural environment and rich heritage.

The Mayor of Waverley, John Wakefield said it would take visitors to two of the world's best beaches, Bondi, in his council, and Manly in the north.
