Parramatta Eels officials battle deregistration in Supreme Court

Parramatta Eels officials battle deregistration in Supreme Court
May 4, 2016

Five Parramatta Eels officials stripped of their NRL registrations for their part in the club’s salary cap scandel have all won last-minute reprieves in the Supreme Court against their deregistering.

The officials - Chairman Steve Sharp, Deputy Chairman Tom Issa, Director Peter Serrao, Chief Executive John Boulous and Football Manager Daniel Anderson – plan to fight the deregistration.

Fairfax Media have reported that Justice Rowan Darke has enacted interim orders temporarily preventing the NRL from imposing limitations on the officials' duties.

The NRL announced yesterday (3rd May) that officials would be deregistered as a result of their part in the club circumventing the league’s salary cap.

The five have accused the NRL of denying them procedural fairness and of potentially breaching company law.

The NRL yesterday stripped the Eels of all their 12 competition points accumulated in 2016 and applied a $1 million fine – with $250,000 suspended provided the club completes specified governance reforms – for systematic breaches of the NRL’s salary cap.

It has been reported that the Eels were found to be $3 million in breach of the salary cap since 2013.

The club was also stripped of their Auckland Nines trophy they won earlier this season.

Yet in more trouble for the club, the NRL have announced that they are still $570,000 over the salary cap for 2016 and will only be able to play for competition points when they cut enough players to ensure they satisfy the NRL that they are under the salary cap.

While yesterday's announcements related to the club and officials, players and their agents may still have questions to answer after the next phase of the NRL integrity unit's investigation is complete.
