The Silverdome, Australia's first indoor velodrome, is an indoor sporting and entertainment venue located in Launceston, Tasmania built in 1984.
Alongside the transferral of ownership, the Silverdome, is to be upgraded following the State Government increasing its investment into the refurbishment by a further $4 million to $12 million.
The upgrades will enable the Silverdome to deliver an even greater fan experience and host more cultural, community, and live entertainment events.
The upgrades will include more seating, better accessibility, new replay screens, a new floor system, better food and beverage options, and better elite and community changerooms.
Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood noted "this is great news and a positive step forward for Launceston as we work together to identify opportunities to significantly improve the city’s current sporting and entertainment capacity.
"We all have special memories of concerts, graduations, sports events and performances held at the Silverdome over the last few decades, and I know everyone will be as excited as I am to see the results of this important upgrade."
Stadiums Tasmania Chief Executive James Avery added “these upgrades will not only significantly enhance the State’s ability to attract more events to the Silverdome but also its capacity to deliver a greater variety of events to the venue.
“The upgrades also ensure the future of existing community and elite level sporting and cultural events at the Silverdome, all of which deliver substantial economic and social value to Launceston and the State more broadly.”
Critical works at the Silverdome will soon commence and are expected to be completed by when the JackJumpers - Tasmania’s professional basketball team based in Hobart -play their first game of the 2025/26 NBL season.
