read moreThe Eric Tweedale Stadium in the Western Sydney suburb of Merrylands has staged its launch event with a healthy crowd turning up to watch the Waratahs take on West Harbour, the Hunter Wildfires, and the Western Sydney Two Blues in three 25-minute matches on Saturday afternoon.
Waratahs Head Coach Darren Coleman used the matches as an opportunity to have a look at the depth of his wider Super Rugby Pacific squad resting several senior players and all his Wallabies.
Completed at the end of last year, the $11.3 million stadium has been a benchmark for sustainable construction with a key focus on an intricately detailed timbre roof structure.
Its design by dwp | design worldwide partnership was named the winner of the Australian Timber Design Award in December 2021 and, in addition to winning the overall Award for Timber design, the project also won in the category of ‘Commercial and Public Buildings’ as well as Excellence in Engineering.
The venue offers a new home for community sport and is home to the Two Blues Rugby Union Club.
The community gym facilities, known as the ETS Gym, at the Stadium open to the public from today (Monday 7th February) with memberships costing from $9 per week.
