Nominations announced for 18th Annual Helpmann Awards

Nominations announced for 18th Annual Helpmann Awards
June 29, 2018

Live Performance Australia (LPA) has announced the list of nominees for its 2018 Helpmann Awards.

Recognising distinguished achievement and excellence in Australia’s live performance industry, nominees in the 42 categories of the Awards were announced at simultaneous events in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Among the nominees, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical scored 11 nominations, Dream Lover and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical both earned six nominations each while the Sydney Theatre Company earned an enormous 27 nominations for its productions in the 2017/18 judging year.

LPA also announced a new format for the national Live Performnance Awards ceremonies, which will see the winners of the 42 nomination categories announced at two separate events over two nights at two different Sydney venues.

LPA Chief Executive Evelyn Richardson explained that the new awards ceremony model, similar to that employed by many major awards ceremonies both nationally and internationally, advising “two shorter shows enable us to better highlight the artistry and excellence in our dynamic live performance industry.”

The first ceremony – known as Act I – will take place on Sunday 15th July at Sydney Town Hall from 6pm to 7.30pm. The event will be a sit-down cocktail affair, celebrating the very best creative, designer and supporting roles. It will also include Awards for Best Presentation for Children and the Best Regional Touring Production. This industry-insider event will include performances and be co-hosted by celebrated broadcaster, director, producer, actor, advisor and artistic director Rhoda Roberts and Michael Lynch, one of Australia’s most experienced and internationally renowned Arts Administrators.

The second ceremony – Act II – will be a (shorter) version of the Helpmann Awards Ceremonies of previous years and will be held at Sydney’s Capitorl Theatre from 8pm on Monday 16th July.

Act II will include all live performance Award genres will be presented, along with a celebration of the 2017 Centenary JC Williamson and Sue Nattrass Award recipients.

An after party will then be held at the Sydney Town Hall from 10pm to 1am.

One Award to be presented is the Best Special Event Award, to the Melbourne International Arts Festival for Taylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of Popular Music.

Co-commissioned by the Festival, Taylor Mac’s mission was to chart a complete social history of the United States through the music that scored its rebellions and revolution, triumphs and tragedies: across four six-hour marathons of staggering scale, covering one decade per hour.

150 local and international artists worked with Taylor Mac’s team to pull off this queer retelling of history, at a time when the lives of Australia’s LGBTIQ+ community were under the spotlight.

Looking foreard to the Awards, Richardson added “we are delighted this year to present our 42 Awards over two exciting nights. Two shorter shows enables us to better highlight the artistry and excellence in our dynamic live performance industry.

“Over the past 18 years the Helpmann Awards have received nearly 11,000 entries and announced over 2,750 Nominees which highlights the scale of the live performance industry enjoyed by 18.4 million people each year in Australia.”

The Helpmann Awards recognise Australia’s live performance sectors including musicals, contemporary music, comedy, opera and classical music, theatre, ballet, dance and physical theatre, presentations for children, regional touring and cabaret.
