New Zealand officials reviewing Lions tour security
New Zealand’s authorities are considering enhancing security arrangements for the upcoming British and Irish Lions rugby tour following the terror attack in Manchester earlier this week.
The Lions are due to play the first game of their 10-match tour on 3rd June at Okara Park, Whangarei, before playing other fixtures in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Rotorua and Wellington.
Their schedule includes three tests against the All Blacks, one at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium and two at the 50,000-seat Eden Park in Auckland, including the tour’s final fixture on 8th July.
With thousands of Lions fans due to travel from the UK and Ireland, New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English admitted that increased security is being discussed.
Prime Minister English told the Otago Daily Times “we have a team of people who are pretty experienced at it and I’m absolutely sure they will be taking into account these events, if only because so many of the fans coming here are coming from the UK.
“I think one of the important aspects of how we deal with these incidents is to not allow them to paralyse ongoing public life.”
Prime Minister English added that there was no evidence of a heightened risk of attack in New Zealand, but said intelligence agencies and other officials would remain vigilant.
