New Wanaka Pool development reaches halfway stage

New Wanaka Pool development reaches halfway stage
September 4, 2017

Construction of the new $12.28 million Wanaka Pool, adjacent to the Wanaka Recreation Centre at Three Parks, is approximately 50% complete and beginning to take shape.

Queenstown Lakes District Council have today advised that the foundations and stainless steel pool walls are in place with the building frames to be erected within the next few weeks.

While progress on the pool has been positive, the project team have had to overcome a few challenges resulting in the pool, with completion now scheduled for late May 2018.

Cook Brothers Construction Business Development Director Simon Glass explains “while it is disappointing the project is running slightly behind on its original programme, the project team are working hard to bring it back on track and we are committed to delivering a fantastic facility for the Upper Clutha community.”

The current Wanaka Pool on Plantation Road will continue to operate until the new pool opens. This has been confirmed following a re-evaluation of its 2015 seismic strengthening.

The new Wanaka Pool is anticipated to be a valuable addition to the busy Wanaka Recreation Centre which has seen a continued increase in winter bookings for the artificial turf and indoor courts, and will be hosting the upcoming Upper Clutha Festival of Sport and Recreation on the 23rd September.

Queenstown Lakes District Council Sport and Recreation Manager, Simon Battrick, advised that he is “looking forward to the upcoming summer when the two new sports fields are able to be used following their development and seeding earlier in the year.”

The Council advises that the field development will help alleviate the strong demand for football in the Wanaka area for next years’ winter season.
