New Rotorua Green Corridor provides cycleway through inner city

New Rotorua Green Corridor provides cycleway through inner city
November 12, 2015

Rotorua Lakes Council has officially opened a new 'Green Corridor', providing a pathway for cyclists and others on wheels, through the city.

The project is part of the Rotorua 2030 Inner City Revitalisation strategy and is a concept with roots in the Rotorua Cycling Strategy first adopted in 2005, and a CBD development report by Opus Consultants, adopted in 2006.

The nearly two kilometre Green corridor provides a separated and landscaped pathway between existing footpaths and the roadway on a route through the central city and Kuirau Park. It links with a number of existing cycleways in the district, meaning cyclists can now travel across the city on a safe dedicated pathway and is also available for use by skateboard and scooter users, mobility vehicles, families with pushchairs, and walking and running groups.

Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick recently presided over the official opening, joined by visiting officials from the United Nations Global Compact Cities Programme in cutting a green ribbon to open the new pathway in front of a large crowd on Thursday 8th October.

Rotorua Lakes Council's Inner City Revitalisation Portfolio lead, Councillor Karen Hunt, says the Green Corridor has been designed so people can experience and enjoy the inner city.

Councillor Hunt stated "it’s not meant as a quick thoroughfare but as a way to relax and explore what’s on offer in city.

"We want people to feel engaged and excited by the new corridor and what it represents as part of our inner city revival.”

Funding for the $397,000 project was shared between New Zealand Transport Agency (57%) and Rotorua Lakes Council (43%), with the Green Corridor developed in conjunction with the Inner City Focus Group and Cycle Action Rotorua.
