read moreA new network of recreational trails around the scenic Kholo Gardens will cater for the boom in walking, trail running and mountain biking and establish a premier venue to attract multi-sport events to Ipswich.
The development of about 10 kilometres of new trails is proposed across four reserves, as well as signage and a park shelter.
Ipswich City Council Conservation and Environment Committee Chairperson Kerry Silver said the new trails would be close to a clean and picturesque reach of the Brisbane River, which made it well suited to attracting multi-sport events that include swimming or paddling, such as cross triathlon and adventure racing.
Councillor Silver advised “these new shared walking and mountain bike trails will help establish Kholo Gardens as Ipswich’s premier venue for multi-sport events.”
Councillor Silver said recreation was important to the health and well-being of the community, and the flexibility of nature-based activities made them easier to fit around a busy lifestyle.
She added “already, bushwalking and mountain biking are by far the most popular activities permitted in Council parks and reserves, and participation rates are expected to grow.
“This new network of trails will help meet that demand.”
Kholo Gardens, Hillview Drive Reserve, Kholo Bridge Reserve and Kholo Park were identified in 2015 as suitable locations for future trail networks through the Pine Mountain/Kholo Open Space Planning Guideline.
