read moreSet to open on Monday (12th May) the Elite Training Centre in Geelong will include one of the first publically accessible altitude training facilities in Victoria.
The new gym, being launched by Geelong mixed martial arts star Peter Davenport, along with business partners Paul and Bek Rutherford, will be located in a heritage-listed warehouse on Geelong’s Latrobe Boulevard.
Over recent months the former wool warehouse has had an injection of more than $2 million to transform it into a state-of-the-art gymnasium, with an organic cafe, apparel shop and supplements store.
Davenport told the Geelong Advertiser that the altitude room is unmatched in Australia, stating “Collingwood has the biggest altitude room in the world and this will be the biggest public altitude room in the country.
“Altitude training is phenomenal. It has massive benefits for rehabilitation and performance enhancement. It’s something that the Geelong Football Club doesn’t have and it would be ideal for their players, other elite athletes and up-and-coming athletes.”
The upstairs altitude room will feature cardio machines and exercise bikes along with a state-of-the-art rowing facility with 12 rowing machines, as well as a yoga/pilates area and circuit training. In addition, there will be a viewing area which will be furnished with couches.
Downstairs will include over 600 metres2 of open floor space, including a full recovery room with a 12 person ice bath and infra-red sauna. A full size, raised-floor boxing ring, pin-loaded dual axis cybex machines and free weights, grassed area for crossfit training, kettle bells, tractor tyres and sled pulls, mats and bags for kickboxing and boxing, along with a powerlifting area with full Olympic lifting platforms will complete the ground floor area.
Davenport added “there will be an off-peak time between 10am and 2pm when mums and their kids can come in and train together.
“We’d like to see kids come in and do jiu jitsu, wrestling, muay thai and mixed martial arts sessions while their parents enjoy a coffee or train themselves in a friendly atmosphere.
“In non-peak times we aim to run programs for disadvantaged kids.”
“We’ll have 12 personal trainers and we’ll be capping membership at 1000 to ensure it’s more exclusive. We’ll be the only gym in Geelong that offers family memberships.”
