New community hub to open for Green Square

November 23, 2010
Green Square, one of Sydney's newest communities, will have its own community centre from 3rd December in the historic TOTE building.
Residents will have access to a full range of council services including dog and cat registration, DA lodgement, parking permits as well as a small library collection of books, magazines, CDs, newspapers, DVDs and toys, and free internet and computer access.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said providing a library and council services would foster a sense of community in Green Square.
"Community centres connect people of all ages and backgrounds. They can make all the difference to the quality of urban life."
The Green Square precinct is one of the largest urban development areas in Australia and once complete is expected to house 40,000 residents and 22,000 workers.
The community centre is the first of a range of facilities planned for Green Square, including new parks, sporting fields, an aquatic centre, library and shuttle bus service.
The TOTE building dates back to 1908 when it formed part of the Victoria Park Racecourse developed by James Joynton Smith. Smith drained Waterloo Swamp to create the track, which rivalled the AJC's Randwick racecourse. During WW2 the racecourse was effectively closed when it was occupied by the military. The building then became the British Motor Corporation car plant.
