Nambour to Coolum trail to be a first for the Sunshine Coast

Nambour to Coolum trail to be a first for the Sunshine Coast
April 28, 2017

The first east-west recreation trail for the Sunshine Coast is a step closer after the Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the draft Nambour to Coolum trail which will encourage even more people to head outdoors and enjoy our great environment.

Connecting the hinterland to the coast, the trail will offer more walking, running and cycling opportunities for our region and provide a unique opportunity to access a diversity of recreational, natural and historical experiences.

The Draft Trail proposes a network of trails covering 48 kilometres, located predominantly on public land.

It includes 18 kilometres of primary trail, 16 kilometres of trail extensions and 14 kilometres of long-term strategic links.

Local residents in Nambour, Bli Bli and Coolum will be the first to benefit from the proposed trail with the local trail experiences in those locations set to be delivered in the first phase.

The Draft Trail has been developed following extensive community consultation in 2016, and has received strong support from local residents, mountain bike clubs, cycling groups, canoe trail paddlers.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Greg Rogerson said the trail would mark the start of an exciting new chapter, particularly for Nambour.

Councillor Rogerson explained “the trail will be strategically progressed focusing on linkages on publicly owned land.

“Council will continue to engage with the community and respect the views of all private landholders as the draft trail is developed.

“We received fantastic feedback during the community consultation last year with great support for the trail and the multiple user experiences it would be able to offer.

“Some alternative alignments were recommended with strong support by local residents and potential trail users, including an upgrade to the bicycle lane and footpath along Petrie Creek Road as a key strategic connection.”

Sunshine Coast Councillor Steve Robinson said the trail would create a wonderful opportunity to combine nature-based walks and activities with community-lead experiences to attract visitors to the region, adding “I’m sure it will encourage local residents to enjoy and explore the Sunshine Coast’s spectacular natural environment and will contribute to our vision of being Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.”

Planning and implementation of the Nambour to Coolum Trail will be included in the 15-year Recreation Trails Development Plan and feature in upcoming budget considerations.
