Mt Hotham promotes bushwalking for Summer

Mt Hotham promotes bushwalking for Summer
December 18, 2019

Having advised on the commencement of their bushwalking season, Mt Hotham is promoting their location as one of the best in North East Victoria for exploring the magnificent High Country on foot.

For independent walkers, Mt Hotham’s Track Notes are available online and in the Mt Hotham Transit Lounge.

For those preferring a guided introduction to the area, Mt Hotham offers a free summer bushwalking program to help access Australia's best views, unique flora, and some of the region’s rich history.

Mt Hotham will host eight guided walks between Boxing Day and Australia Day, taking visitors to five different locations within the resort.

Knowledgeable outdoor staff will guide guests to the Mt Hotham summit, the top of Mt Higginbotham, Brandy Creek Mine and the spectacular Dargo and Christmas Hill lookout areas and share the history of each along the way.

All are short walks, 3-5 kilometres in length and are designated at Grade 2-3 according to the Australian Walking Track Grading System.

Jason Nightingale, Senior Manager Guest Engagement for the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board, said the walks will give hikers a taste for Hotham’s scenic beauty and other tracks and trails and advised “Hotham and the surrounding Alpine National Park are set amidst a uniquely diverse alpine landscape and the best way to explore both is bushwalking.

“Along with our short walks, Hotham has access to some truly iconic alpine tracks and trails such as the Razorback and Mt Feathertop tracks, the Three Huts and Cobungra Ditch walks and the 37km Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing.

“At 1861metres above sea level, Hotham has the benefit of being much cooler than down in the valleys, so even our hottest days are pleasant and perfect for bushwalking.”

More guided walks will take place in autumn over the Labour Day, Easter and Anzac Day long weekends.

People hiking at Mt Hotham are reminded to be properly prepared as weather conditions can still change rapidly with snowfalls and blizzards possible at any time of the year.
