As had been predicted, a massive crowd of 91,092 people attending day one of the Boxing Day Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground broke a world record that had stood for 52 years.

With all tickets sold for the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, the crowd broke the previous record for a day of cricket of 90,800 - set on day two of the fifth Test of the 1960/61 series between Australia and the West Indies - also at the MCG.

With tickets on sale since 23rd October, demand to see Australia face England in the fourth Test took attendance close to the MCG's maximum capacity of 100,000.

Cricket Australia General Manager Operations Mike McKenna had previously stated "it has been fantastic to see the strong demand for tickets to the Ashes Boxing Day Test, with fans eager to catch the cricket action and soak up the great match atmosphere."

Crowds for Tests in the Indian city of Calcutta have been rumoured to be larger but no official attendance records are kept.
