MCA Australia launches new free creativity and wellbeing program

MCA Australia launches new free creativity and wellbeing program
June 29, 2022

As part of World Wellbeing Week (27th June - 1st July), the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia has introduced a new free creativity and wellbeing program, Art Flow. Co-curated with The Mind Room Melbourne, the program will be available to Museum visitors over the age of 18.

Art Flow is a wellbeing experience that has been developed over the last two years through extensive collaboration between the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) and Melbourne based psychology practice, The Mind Room.

Visitors taking part in Art Flow will be led on a 45-minute contemplative experience by MCA artist-educators during which they will reflect on an MCA Collection artwork, and perhaps themselves, in new ways.

Gill Nicol, MCA Director, Audience Engagement advises “The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia is excited to launch this new program, created in response to these post-COVID times, where connection and wellbeing are more important than ever. Being with art can help reduce stress and be a powerful source of wellbeing. Art Flow is open to everyone over 18 years of age and no prior knowledge is necessary to participate. It’s an invitation to visitors to experience something new and has the potential to connect back to yourself through art.”

Dr Jo Mitchell from The Mind Room added “flourishing in life is a skill that takes understanding and practice. We are delighted to co-curate this art and wellbeing experience with the Museum of Contemporary Art. Art Flow is about connecting through art with our emotional life so we can thrive as individuals and communities.”

Commencing on 30th June, Art Flow will take place every Thursday and Saturday at 10.15am and 12.15pm. Each week, the artwork will change with four different Guided Experiences focusing on Australian artists in the MCA Collection on Level 2.

Upcoming Art Flow sessions include:

  • Thursday 30th June and Saturday 2nd July  artwork:  Angela Tiatia, Lick, 2015
  • Thursday 7th July and Saturday 9th July, artwork: Elizabeth Mipilanggurr Bamagora (conical pandanus palm mat) 2001
  • Thursday 14th July and Saturday 16th July, artwork: Nicholas Mangan, A World Undone, 2012
  • Thursday 21st July and Saturday 23rd July, artwork: Khadim Ali, The Haunted Lotus, 2011-2012

Participation is free, however registrations are required (allocation of 10 per group).
