read moreLuna Park Melbourne has celebrated its 100th birthday with free community activities, music concerts and heritage events set to continue throughout the summer months while also playing host to a series of special ticketed events.
A true Melbourne icon and a vital part of the city's heart and soul, Australia's oldest theme park has put smiles on the faces of generations of guests and families since its opening on Friday 13th December 1912.
On that day, an excited 22,319 people flocked through the now famous Face and Towers and the huge Mr Moon mouth. Over 80,000 lights were turned on that first night, adding an atmosphere of fairy-tale amazement to the scene. Live entertainment at the opening included global high-wire stars Granada and Fedora, who traversed high above Luna Park on a length of wire, dressed up as elephants!
The Melbourne Luna Park was based on the original concept built on Coney Island, New York in 1903. It was developed by American showman and entrepreneur J D Williams along with the Phillips brothers, who later brought the Luna Park enterprise to Australia. Out of the four Luna Parks built in Australia (the other two built at Glenelg, South Australia and Redcliffe, Queensland), only Melbourne and Sydney are still currently in operation.
Luna Park Chief Executive Mary Stuart is keen to spread the excitement of the centenary as far as possible, explaining "Luna Park is Australia's oldest ' pleasure park' and is a treasure that has survived against the odds. It has a charm and a character that cannot be invented or replicated. Luna Park holds a special place in the hearts of people who come here with such goodwill and excitement. Melbourne is rightly proud of this special place and what it stands for."
Luna Park Melbourne's centenary is featured in the November/December 2012 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
