Labor pledges to give 1,000 defibrillators to Victorian sports clubs

Victorian Opposition leader Daniel Andrews has pledged to provide 1,000 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Victorian sporting clubs and facilities if Labor wins the upcoming Victorian election.

The $2.7 million plan is aimed at improving survival rates for people who enter cardiac arrest - with 5,000 Victorians going into sudden cardiac arrest while not in a hospital each year.

With 20% of these cardiac arrests occurring in public places, Andrews announced “Labor will give defibrillators to footy grounds and sports venues, so volunteers, supporters and players can step in if they need to.”

An AED is an electrical device that provides a shock to the heart after cardiac arrest. With most deaths involving cardiac arrest occurring before a person reaches hospital, there have been increasing calls for aquatic centres, fitness clubs, sporting events and venues to be equipped with defibrillators.

Last week, following the death of a 27-year-old competitor in Sydney's City2Surf event, Sydney University and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Cardiologist Professor Chris Semsarian called for the lifesaving devices to be in place at every school and at every sporting event. 

Professor Semsarian stated "defibrillators should be at every sporting field and in every school."

Daniel Andrew's announcement was cautiously welcomed by The Heart Foundation, although Heart Foundation Victoria Chief Executive Diana Heggie explained that community education is needed so Victorians have the confidence to use defibrillators.

Heggie stated “while evidence shows that lives can be saved when defibrillators are available in public places, members of the public must have the knowledge and confidence to use a defibrillator.”

Sue Buckland, who co-founded the Defib Your Club, For Life! campaign to place defibrillators at sporting clubs across Australia after her 19-year-old son collapsed at AFL training and died of cardiac arrest in 2010

Buckland stated "to have the opportunity to save a lot more is just brilliant."
