Kiama Council prioritises high use sites for grass surface maintenance

Kiama Council prioritises high use sites for grass surface maintenance
February 12, 2024

Kiama Council has advised that its parks and gardens teams are working on getting all community grassed areas maintained with the resources available.

Director Infrastructure and & Liveability Michael Malone said this included focusing on high use sites that benefit as many people across the community as possible, such as sports fields, popular visitor destinations and for local events such as the NYE Sky Show and Kiama Show.

The team has been busy this week at Kalelua and Marsden Heads slashing the grass and weeds.

It's the second time the team in a matter of weeks the team has been deployed to the area to maintain the walking paths.

Large areas of Werri Headland have also been maintained.

Malone said the situation at Kalelua and Marsden Heads was an example of the challenges faced by his mowing team noting "we acknowledge the concerns of our community about overgrown grass and weeds across our Municipality.

"This year has seen excellent grass growing conditions with warm days and plenty of rain.

"Unfortunately, the rain not only means more grass and weeds, it also means we often cannot use of our tractor and other equipment to slash without damaging the grounds."

Mr Malone said storms and other weather events had meant redeploying outdoor crews to emergency jobs such as road repairs and removing debris and damaged trees.

"Like many businesses and organisations, we also have less staff during the summer period, as our workers also need to take leave, which means there are less people to complete tasks."

"All this is part of Kiama Council's efforts to refine and implementation our plan to return to a financially sustainable operating position, so that we can provide services such as managing our parks and reserves, not just this summer, but for many summers to come."

"We thank you for your patience and look forward to getting on top of outstanding maintenance works as soon as possible."
