read moreInfrastructure NSW has welcomed planning approval for the temporary exhibition venue at Glebe Island, which will host events during the construction of new, world-class facilities close to Sydney's Darling Harbour from late 2013 to late 2016.
Project Director Tim Parker said planning approval for Glebe Island Expo from the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure was another step forward for the project.
Parker explained "this allows us to finalise arrangements for the contract to build, operate and remove the facility.
"We are working to do this as soon as possible, so we can provide certainty to the events industry and confirm a number of provisional bookings at Glebe Island Expo.
"The new facility will be a fully-enclosed marquee-style structure. Creating a high-quality temporary venue at Glebe Island is part of a city-wide solution to ensure Sydney remains number one for the important major events industry during the construction work at Darling Harbour."
It is expected Glebe Island Expo will operate for major events on around 120 days each year. Infrastructure NSW is placing a high priority on minimising traffic impacts and providing public transport to the site - an approach reinforced in the conditions of approval for the project.
Regular shuttle bus services from the CBD and ferry services from Darling Harbour will run on event days, and a transport management plan will be in place for each event.
