read moreFairfield City Council has revealed plans to redevelop the Fairfield Showground in the western city suburb of Prairiewood for major sporting events, concerts and festivals.
Already the hub of the community, housing many clubs and welcoming thousands for annual celebrations, since the 1970s it has been a preferred venue for festivals, carnivals, markets and club meets, attracting as many as 20,000 people.
Fairfield Council has begun the public exhibition of the Fairfield Showground Draft Plan of Management outling its plans to redevelop the Showground into a regional multicultural and sporting complex.
Stage one of the planned redevelopment includes an international-size football field and an all-weather synthetic field, festival and events area and AFL/cricket field, a lighting upgrade for the new football field and installation of high-standard lighting for all playing fields.
An extended awning area would also be constructed to accommodate concerts, festivals, field games and outdoor cinema.
Future stages of the development could include upgrades to some of the community clubs’ buildings, as well as the construction of an indoor sports and cultural centre.
The Council’s plan of management said “it is anticipated that the indoor sport and cultural centre will consist of up to four enclosed playing areas, grandstand seating, (and an) internal kiosk with external serving windows”.
The centre would include a stage with back-of-house facilities, lettable office spaces and a large group educational kitchen.
It would allow for a range of sports to be played, including badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball, as well as be a venue for medium-scale concerts, conferences and cooking spaces.
The Fairfield Showground Draft Plan of Management is on public exhibition until 28th May, with submissions welcome until 11th June.
