read moreThe Eden Park Trust has expressed “delight” that the first ever Sunday night of sport under lights at the venue went off without a hitch.
A statement from the Trust advised “as we embark on the final day of the inaugural Day/Night Test at Eden Park we commend the work of the wider team in gaining special consent to facilitate the first night sporting event on a Sunday in 115 years.
“The Black Caps and England have played under lights in the pink ball test over the past four evenings but Sunday’s event was at a cost of $60,000 to secure three hours of activity during a normally excluded period.
“The application was supported by a number of residents who expressed their view very clearly that they consider more activity at the Park to be beneficial to their local amenity.
“Eden Park continues to consult broadly with the community as it considers future event activity and plans to retain the community’s trust in hosting events responsibly, taking their interests into account.
“Gestures of goodwill were witnessed over the weekend, where residents shared coffee and cake with security staff and one neighbour lending car jumper leads to one of our patrons.”
In another first, the main oval is set to host residents of ‘The Hood’ for a match of backyard cricket tomorrow evening. 30 families have been invited to test their skills on the very pitch the Black Caps and England have just graced.
The families taking part will receive a limited edition ‘The Hood’ Backyard cricket set courtesy of Mr Vintage along with some delicious snacks thanks to the I Love Food Co.
Eden Park Chief Executive Nick Sautner explained “Eden Park has once again showcased Auckland to a global broadcast audience and in doing so delivered significant economic benefits to Auckland and its communities.”
A number of the new initiatives developed collaboratively with New Zealand Cricket specific to this day-night Test showcases Eden Park’s flexibility.
