dwp architects spotlight design awards received for Western Sydney’s Eric Tweedale Stadium
October 26, 2022

Global architecture firm dwp | design worldwide partnership is a pioneering sustainable design practice that has delivered many award-winning projects praised for their contribution to a sustainable future and environmental design. Their most recent project winning awards across the globe is the Eric Tweedale Stadium located in Granville in Sydney’s west.

The design of the Eric Tweedale Stadium is driven by an authentic connection to the local environment and history of the Cumberland Plains. Located within Granville Park, once a widely forested area, its form and materiality responds to the site’s heritage and creates a connection to its current sporting environment.

The stadium has been highly recognised for its sustainable design and the first use of glulam timber for this type of facility in Australia, representing an impressive achievement in timber engineering.

Sustainable design was an important objective of the project and timber construction was key to achieving this. The goal was to demonstrate that this scale of building can be a highly sustainable development that is low carbon, low waste and highly energy efficient.

Shortly after the stadium was officially opened in November 2021, it received its first prestigious award, the Australian Timber Design Award where it won in three categories; public and commercial, excellence in engineering and the overall winner for 22nd Australian Timber Design Awards.

Following this the stadium received a commendation at the 2022 Australian Institute of Architects awards (NSW Chapter) in Public Buildings category, was a gold winner in the Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2022 (Sports Architecture - Built), a gold winner in the Global Future Design Awards 2022 (Sports Architecture - built) and most recently was announced as a winner of Best of the Best in the category of recreational architecture for Architecture Masterprize.

The stadium has been shortlisted for the Sustainability Awards in the category of ‘public buildings’. The awards will be announced in Sydney at the Sustainability Summit in November.

One of the most prestigious awards in the architecture world are the WAF (World Architecture Festival) Awards. The 2022 event will be held in Lisbon, Portugal at the end of November and beginning of December where each finalist will present their project to the judges. Eric Tweedale Stadium has been announced as a finalist in two categories; completed buildings - sport and for the Best Use of Certified Timber Prize.

Lead design architect for the Stadium and Sydney studio director Ivana Simkovic will present the project at the awards.

Simkovic noted “I feel honoured to be representing our dwp team at this year's WAF Awards.

"To achieve an outstanding design and great sustainable outcome for the Eric Tweedale Stadium is not only benefiting the client but the community at large. Furthermore I look forward to creating awareness around the dwp global studios ability and commitment to sustainability and pushing the boundaries of design."

Theca Australia provided the engineered timber used in the Eric Tweedale Stadium.
