City of Sydney expands park fitness equipment program
Users of Turruwul Park in the Sydney suburb of Rosebery can dip, crunch and bench their way through 2017 at a new outdoor gym.
Part of the City of Sydney’s park equipment fitness program, the new exercise station offers a range of workouts for strength, cardio and flexibility at low and high intensities.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore explained “with a booming population and increasingly dense communities, the need for high-quality parks and green spaces in our city has never been greater.
“In 2015, the City adopted a plan to create more outdoor fitness stations to give our residents every opportunity to lead a fit and healthy lifestyle while enjoying our wonderful parks.
“We aim to ensure that a free and easy outdoor workout station is no more than 800m away from any of our residents and Turruwul Park was on the top of our shortlist of eleven parks recommended for new fitness stations.
“Low levels of physical activity are linked to obesity and chronic diseases, so it’s important the City provides plenty of safe, inclusive facilities for fitness and physical exercise.
The new exercise equipment at Turruwul Park includes includes an arm bike, spin bike and cross trainer for cardio and new bars, benches and chains for strength and suspension training. The park’s basketball court and hit-up wall have also been upgraded.
Other sites on the shortlist are: Alexandria Park, Alexandria; Waterloo Park, Waterloo; Observatory Hill Park, Millers Point; Pirrama Park, Pyrmont; South Sydney Rotary Park, Eveleigh; Embarkation Park, Potts Point; Johnstons Creek Parklands, Glebe; James Hilder Reserve, Surry Hills; Gunyama Park, Green Square and Victoria Park, Chippendale.
