City of Darwin continues to deliver enhanced and safer play spaces

City of Darwin continues to deliver enhanced and safer play spaces
June 13, 2025

As part of the ongoing Playground Revitalisation Program, City of Darwin is continuing its delivery of enhanced and safer play spaces, with several playground projects recently completed and more upgrades set to roll out across the municipality in coming weeks.

The Playground Revitalisation Program aims to create fun and engaging environments for children and families throughout Darwin and reflects Council's long-term commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and creating spaces that support active, healthy lifestyles.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis notes "City of Darwin is proud to be delivering quality outdoor spaces that bring our communities together and support healthy childhood development.

"We've already completed important upgrades across three popular sites.

“At Juliet Shields Park in Muirhead, we replaced ageing softfall with new rubberised surfacing, making it safer and more comfortable for children to play all year round.

“In Malak, we are delivering much-needed shade over the Malak Park Obstacle Course Playground through our Better Suburbs Program, ensuring residents can enjoy this facility even during the hottest months.

“And at East Point Reserve, we've completed the installation of artificial shade and rubberised softfall under the Liberty Swing-an upgrade that improves accessibility for children and families living with disability, thanks to our Disability Access Program."

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the momentum would continue, with three more playgrounds scheduled for full transformations this month – works have commenced at George Park in Fannie Bay, delivering a complete playground transformation.

Next will be upgrades at Dorisvale Park in Tiwi and Bayfield Park in Malak, both of which will undergo refurbishment later this month.

These upcoming projects are all about responding to community needs and ensuring families across Darwin have access to high-quality and safe places to play".

City of Darwin manages 149 play spaces, including 128 playgrounds, 19 exercise stations, one skate park, and an obstacle course.

All playground upgrades are guided by the Play Space Strategy, which helps plan and prioritise recreational investment across the city.
