The world class Champion Lakes Regatta Centre is to be transferred from the Western Australian Government's Armadale Redevelopment Authority (ARA) to its VenuesWest agency in January 2012.

The Champion Lakes project, a 122 hectare site, was identified in the 1990's by the City of Armadale and the Western Australian Planning Commission as the location for a regional scale recreational facility with a water-based focus.

VenuesWest Chairman Graham Partridge welcomed yet another world class venue into the VenuesWest portfolio, stating "this is a great facility not only for Armadale, but for all of WA.

"This is truly fantastic venue, and the Armadale Redevelopment Authority should be highly commended on the planning and development to provide such a great facility to Western Australia."

"The Government of Western Australia continues to make significant investment in sporting venues in diverse locations and this will certainly contribute to participation and physical activity and provide better health outcomes for its users," he said

VenuesWest's growing portfolio includes Perth Arena, Challenge Stadium, Arena Joondalup, WA Athletics Stadium, WA Basketball Centre, Midvale Speeddome, Perth Motorplex, WA Rugby Centre with the State Netball Centre in the planning phase.

Champion Lakes is a $37 million, 55 hectare lake with a 2,000 metre international standard rowing course, warm up lake, boat shed storage area and club area, the centre is home to a number of sporting groups and hosts national and international competitions.

The Centre was developed when the ARA took advantage of an opportunity when the Tonkin Highway was being built to construct a high quality rowing, canoeing and water sport facility.

It has hosted Dragon Boat, Kayaking, Rowing and Radio Sailing National Championships as well as State Championships in Rowing, Kayaking, Outrigger Canoes, and Radio Sailing. Champion Lakes is also currently home to Western Australia's 'Head of the River' competitions.

In 2012 the venue will host the Australia Open Water Swimming Championships and the Australian Rowing Championships.
