The Masters Games are open to athletes aged over 30 with some competitors continuing into their 90s.
The event attracts around 10,000 participants and their supporters from across the country for eight days of competition, which will be a boost to local accommodation providers and hospitality venues.
The Australian Masters Games has an extensive program of more than 50 sports for competitors and supporters to enjoy - softball, baseball, athletics, lawn bowls, dragon boat… plus lots of other great sports to round out the program including ten pin bowling, darts, petanque and weightlifting to name just a few.
Federal Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry notes “Sport participation provides avenues for people to meet, build new friendships, stay physically active and support their overall wellbeing.
“Hosting the event is an opportunity for us to show off our beautiful city and demonstrate why we have one of the highest sports participation rates in the country.”
The Australian Masters Games were last held in Canberra in 2003.
Confederation of Australian Sport Chief Executive Rob Bradley adds “The Confederation of Australian Sport is delighted to see the Australian Masters Games back in Canberra for the first time since 2003 when more than 10,000 masters athletes competed.
“The ACT Government submitted an outstanding bid to host AMG 2025 with an extremely high quality of sporting venues, social and entertainment options and great tourism attractions – Canberra really does present the complete package.”
Created by the Confederation of Australian Sport in 1987, the Australian Masters Games is a week-long festival of sport that brings together weekend warriors from around Australia, and the world, to enjoy an extensive sport and social program in an exciting holiday destination.
