Calypso Innovates in Youth Fitness

Calypso Innovates in Youth Fitness
October 16, 2009

New Zealand's first 'youth-only' fitness and training centre on Auckland's North Shore is changing the way fitness professionals provide services for children and teenagers.

The Calypso Sports & Fitness Centreâs approach is based on the philosophies of multi-lateral development (exposing youngsters to a wide variety of activities before specialising in particular sporting activities), focusing on movement principles rather than sets & reps, and taking an interactive teaching-based approach to athletic conditioning for young athletes. It moves far away from the traditional strength or cardio machines, circuits, isolated exercises, or repetitive programming styles common in many adult gyms and health clubs.

Calypso which doesn't feature conventional fitness equipment, was launched by husband and wife duo Gareth and Leigh Ashton in June this year, and the pair are extremely passionate about the service they provide.

As Leigh Ashton explains, "these fundamentals give sporty kids the platform to achieve at the highest level, plus give less competitive participants a place to get active and have fun with their peers without the intimidation of structured sports."

Calypso programmes focus on developing all-round athleticism, including speed and movement skills, strength and coordination, transferable sports skills, plus games and challenges. Classes are run in an open training space and incorporate small training aids, free weights and sports equipment. Individual members attend scheduled classes suited to their age, plus sports teams and groups can book in together.

Leigh Ashton adds "it is becoming more common for children and teens to seek out complementary fitness activities, and is vital that this population group receive appropriate training activities to meet their specific needs. Adult-based programming and machines have no place in the realm of youth fitness and training; coaches and trainers prescribing watered down adult programmes to kids are doing more harm than good."

They are also less than enthusiastic about the recent surge of child-sized fitness equipment, stating "these products are not dangerous in the short term, but the benefits are few and limited. Young bodies need to learn to function efficiently in a way that prepares them for life and also sports; utilising multiple joints and muscles for movement in a coordinated manner. Seated leg extensions, chest presses or junior treadmills simply do not meet the demands of real world situations and if kids do not learn to move properly they could be more prone to injuries in later life."

Calypso's unique approach incorporates fitness training exercises appropriate for kids, and skill development more commonly seen in sports coaching.

Leigh Ashton concludes "the Calypso Way gives kids and teens a fantastic base of movement foundations, plus the ability and confidence to achieve their goals."
