Bunbury lookout and trail transformation to be major drawcard for locals and tourists

The $5 million transformation of Bunbury's Maidens Reserve with an impressive scenic lookout and trail is now underway and when complete will be a major drawcard for both locals and visitors to Bunbury.

The Maidens Walk, located in South Bunbury – coastal town in southwestern Western Australia - comprises a series of limestone-based walk trails that meander through the Maidens Reserve. The Maidens is characterised by a series of high sand dunes offering extensive views of the city from several lookouts.

The area is of high conservation value as it supports a diverse range of species including numerous native orchids. The Maidens is also home to a healthy population of Tuart trees which have suffered declining numbers in recent years on other parts of the Swan Coastal Plain.

The upgrades are part of the State Government's election commitment to the creation and management of Bunbury's Kalgulup Regional Park.

The project will feature an upper and lower lookout providing panoramic views of Kalgulup Regional Park and the wider City of Bunbury.

A new 670 metre wheelchair accessible pathway will lead to the lower lookout through the surrounding Tuart Forest. The lower lookout will be 45 metres high while the upper lookout will be 67 metres in height, connected by 153 steps. Interpretive signage will share the area's rich history with visitors.

Local company Picton Civil Pty Ltd has been chosen to construct the project, creating about 80 jobs. 80% of the contract value will be spent in the region.

The recently expanded parking area and playground developed by the City of Bunbury along Ocean Drive will complement the Maidens Reserve development.

WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby notes "This project will deliver a nature-based recreational area the entire community can enjoy.”

The scenic lookout and trail are expected to be complete mid next year. The design was informed by the City of Bunbury's Co-Design Access Panel. The project is managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
