read moreBrisbane City Council’s commitment to creating a green and biodiverse city has seen the planting of over 2.5 million trees over the past 11 years.
Commencing with the Two Million Trees Project in 2007, that number of trees were planted across 500 hectares of the city over a five-year period.
Aiming to reduce its carbon footprint, in 2012 the Council further incentivised residents, businesses and not-for-profit organisations to create a green and biodiverse city.
With funding from the Federal Government, the Council worked together with South East Queensland Catchments to plant 100 water ‘smart street trees’ between 2014 and 2018 while also buying and protecting bushland and working towards increasing Brisbane's bushland cover.
The Council planted over two million trees in the Brisbane area between 2008 and 2012.
Explaining Brisbane’s ongoing environment and sustainability commitment, the Council Chairman for Environment, Parks and Sustainability, Councillor David McLachlan advised that “Council is committed to ensuring our city is liveable and sustainable for many years to come, which is why we are investing $16 million this year to continue managing Brisbane’s urban forest and to achieve 40% natural habitat cover by 2031.
“We’re on track to reach this and recently achieved 37% natural habitat cover through our bushland restoration program.
“As part of our commitment to increase natural habitat cover, Council also replaces any trees removed during infrastructure projects with plantings in natural habitat areas.
“This program has restored bushland at 15 sites across the city with our most recent offset plantings at four different locations planting over 16,000 native species and installing nest boxes for native animals.
“Brisbane residents are passionate about tree planting and Council regularly holds community planting events to give communities the chance to get involved.
“In the past fortnight, more than 1,000 trees were planted at a community planting day.”
