Awards recognise EarthCheck’s relevance to global tourism
The work of Brisbane-based tourism advisory group EarthCheck has been recognised with the presentation of a silver award at the 14th United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Innovation Awards in the Spanish capital of Madrid earlier this month.
The UNWTO follows EarthCheck having also won the Premier of Queensland’s Export Award and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council Innovation in Tourism Award in 2017.
Earthcheck founder and Chief Executive Stewart Moore said winning second prize at the UNWTO Awards recognised the leadership and vision of EarthCheck’s General Manager of Sustainability, Marco Sepulveda and a dedicated team of researchers, staff, technical partners and clients who supported EarthCheck develop a global Building Planning and Design Standard.
Moore explained “the EarthCheck Design Standard that has been successfully applied in 14 countries contributes to the delivery of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and places sustainability at the heart of building and community design.
“It provides a holistic framework to help protect destination values, drive responsible economic development and enhance quality of life and wellbeing in local communities.”
EarthCheck is the world's leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for the tourism industry.
Developed by the Sustainable Tourism CRC, the world’s largest dedicated research centre specialising in sustainable tourism and research, in 2010 EarthCheck evolved into the not-for-profit EarthCheck Research Institute (ERI) and the APEC International Centre for Sustainable Tourism.
These centres for excellence are supported by EarthCheck.
