Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships head to Western Australia
The best surf lifesavers in Australia will begin competing at Scarborough Beach later this month when the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships return to Western Australia.
Officially launching the seven-day, 382-event, Western Australian Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said it was a coup for Western Australia to host this exciting week-long competition which will run between 31st March and 6th April.
Minister Harvey stated "since volunteers first started patrols in 1926, Scarborough Beach has been synonymous with surf lifesaving, so it is especially fitting that WA hosts this exciting event at Scarborough."
The Championships were last held in Scarborough for three years from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, more than 81,000 spectators watched the event, with 25,000 attending on the final day.
Minister Harvey, continued "we are pleased to welcome back this wonderful event which highlights the athleticism and talent of some of Australia's finest surf lifesavers, who have been the lifeblood of our beaches for many years."
More than 4,500 surf lifesavers, representing 311 clubs from across the country, will take to the water and the beach in an action-packed schedule of 382 events.
The program will feature surf boat and ski races, beach events and the famous ironman and ironwoman competition.
The 2014 event will be the 11th time that Scarborough Beach has hosted the Championships.
