Australian Sports Foundation achieves record $44.75 million fundraising
August 2, 2017

Australian sport has received an injection of $44.75 million following a third successive record breaking year of fundraising by the Australian Sports Foundation.

The fundraising result is up by over $12 million (40%) on the previous year, and takes total funds raised for sport over the last three financial years to more than $100 million.

The 2016-17 financial year result saw an increase of 850 registered sports fundraising projects, up from 1,494 in 2015/16 to 2,328. These include 182 athlete fundraising projects.

The total number of donation transactions more than doubled from 9,468 in 2015/16, to over 19,000 in 2016/17.

The top 10 fundraising sports in 2016/17 were:

Australian rules football’s fundraising represents $31.42 per participant*, well ahead of rugby Union ($8.89 per person) and Golf ($6.24 per person). Other major participation sports were rugby league ($1.73 per person), football ($1.11 per person), cricket ($0.94 per person) and netball ($0.25 per person).

Australian Sports Foundation Chief Executive Patrick Walker, hailed the record result saying it underlined the growing generosity Australians have for the development of sport.

Walker stated “the money raised for sport through the Sports Foundation assists clubs, organisations and athletes from a local grassroots level through to elite sports, clubs and Australian representative athletes.

“This money has helped clubs purchase essential playing equipment, upgrade training facilities and helped state and national representative athletes with essential training and travel expenses.

“Excitingly, grassroots sports account for the majority of donations for the first time ever. 61% of donations were made to grassroots clubs, up from 39% in the 2015/16 financial year.”

Federal Minister for Sport Greg Hunt congratulated the Sports Foundation on its 40% increase in donations saying the fundraising benefits extend beyond the fields of play.

Minister Hunt commented “the beneficiaries of this dramatic increase in fundraising by the Sports Foundation are the hundreds of thousands of sports participants who are at the core of communities across Australia.

“Active sports participation helps overcome obesity, and its associated health problems, and drives social change and social inclusion.”

Explaining that the ASF is determined to raise $100 million per annum by 2021, Walker added “we are now one of Australia’s top 20 fundraising organisations. In 2013/14, the Sports Foundation raised $17 million for sport and it is a fantastic achievement to have now raised $44.75 million in a single 12-month period.

“However, when you consider the Australian philanthropic market is estimated at $3 billion, there is so much more fundraising potential for sport, Imagine the impact $100 million per annum in fundraising can have on Australian sport.

“Many charities who raised over $20 million per annum have seen a reduction in donor numbers, but we have bucked this trend by having donor growth in excess of 100%. Our recent research revealed that our donors are personally committed to a future for their sport, their club and Aussie athletes.”

The Sports Foundation is listed in the Income Tax Assessment Act as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) and is the only body in Australian that can provide tax-deductions for donations of $2 or more to sports projects.
