read moreAs Australia approaches the 2025 Federal Election, AUSactive, in partnership with the Health and Fitness Association, has shared new research on reversing the physical inactivity crisis.
The study, Reversing the Physical Inactivity Crisis, examines data from 10 nations, including Australia, highlighting the strong link between affordability and participation in health club memberships.
Suggesting that making fitness affordable and accessible should be strategic policy, AUSactive advise that “a 10% reduction in membership costs could encourage 1.8 million more Australians to engage in regular exercise, improving both physical and mental wellbeing. “However, the fitness industry cannot address affordability alone, government action is essential. Policy solutions like means-tested activity vouchers, employer-supported fitness programs, and tax incentives can reduce cost barriers and drive participation.
“Greater access to fitness facilities benefits individuals and the economy, boosting productivity, strengthening communities, and easing healthcare pressures. The next government must prioritise prevention and recognise structured exercise as a critical part of public health.”
