APRA and PPCA agree unified music licensing system

APRA and PPCA agree unified music licensing system
December 15, 2016

Australian music rights management organisations APRA AMCOS and the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a single public performance licensing system under the name OneMusic Australia.

The new one-stop promises a much simpler process for businesses and public places to obtain, manage, report on and pay for the licenses they require to play music, replacing the confusion and frustrations of the old two-licence system.

OneMusic Australia will covers both recording and musical work rights and will be rolled out across the market the second half of 2018. Over the next 18-months, the collecting societies are committed to a period of “intense industry consultation” to help shape the project.

Announced today (Thursday 15th December), the joint venture follows the introduction of OneMusic NZ three years ago, a project which was “warmly welcomed” by licensees, APRA and PPCA noted in a joint statement.

However, until the launch of OneMusic Australia, it will be “business as usual” with both APRA AMCOS and PPCA, both parties say.

Between 2008 and 2011, PPCA went to war with various leisure industry sectors, including fitness and recreation industry, seeking rises in tariffs of over 1,000%.

A successful campaign led by Fitness Australia and backed by leading fitness operators resisted this rise before a new pricing structure was agreed.
