An ice rink is to be installed at Auckland's Aotea Square from late June as part of THE EDGE's Winter Showtime programme.

The ice rink will be the focal point of a THE EDGE's Winter Showtime programme of family-friendly events, providing a great range of entertainment opportunities for families.

THE EDGE Director Robbie Macrae says the ice rink is an exciting way to activate Aotea Square during the colder months, stating "we're used to many people enjoying their lunch or playing a game of touch during the summer, and this gives people a chance to enjoy Aotea Square in winter.

"(Visitors) won't have to worry about our temperamental Auckland weather - the rink will be covered to protect the ice and the skaters and the parking close by at the Civic car park."

The ice rink is set to be imported and managed by Paradice Ice Skating, a local, family owned business with ice rinks in Botany and Avondale.

Paradice General Manager Chris Blong, a former National Figure Skating Champion, says he is excited about bringing ice skating to the CBD, promising skaters cold ice and a warm welcome.

Blong explaines "we're working to create a place where beginners and experienced skaters can have a great time this winter, with the same kind of feel as the outdoor rinks in places like New York and Toronto.

"There'll be lessons available and we're working on a calendar of themed events to add to the fun."

The rink will be open from Saturday 23rd June, with an official opening event Thursday 28th June.
